A series specifically designed by a doula and a former birth assistant for families birthing at a birth center. Attended by midwives with a family-centered approach, this home-like, low-tech setting is a great option for those looking for a physiological birth experience.

Taught over three consecutive weeks, this series will equip expectant families with a thorough understanding of labor. With plenty of practice time, birth partners are empowered to become the best support people they can be. Let us help you walk into the birth experience with confidence and awareness!!

Week 1: Understanding labor

  • Getting ready to birth at a birth center
  • Physical changes during pregnancy
  • Role of hormones in the labor process
  • Managing limiting thoughts
  • Key physical and emotional signs of labor
  • Labor rhythm awareness
  • Communicating with your birth team

Week 2: Labor coping techniques

  • Redefining labor pain
  • Unnecessary sources of discomfort in labor
  • Relevance of having the right labor environment
  • Comfort measures, including breathing, hydrotherapy, massage, movement, positioning, counterpressure, relaxation techniques and much more
  • Physiology of pushing and how to prevent tearing
  • Importance of your birth team, including defining roles of partner, doula, midwife, and birth assistant

Week 3: Special considerations

  • The many and different types of normal labors
  • Spinning Babies® techniques for optimal fetal position
  • Realistic expectations in the event of a hospital transfer
  • Postpartum recovery, including early discharge, self-care, and sexual intimacy after birth

Classes are a mix of lecture, discussion, and practice and take place on 3 consecutive Wednesday evenings. 

Fee includes the pregnant person + one support person.
