Childbirth Education 3-Week Series

Our most comprehensive childbirth preparation course. Ideal for first-time parents interested in a thorough and comprehensive view of all aspects of birthing including the basics of feeding and caring for your baby during the first six weeks after birth. This series is taught over three consecutive weeks to allow couples to slowly digest and integrate the material. 

Week 1: Understanding labor

  • Physical changes during pregnancy, including prevention of common aches and pains
  • Role of hormones in the labor process
  • Managing limiting thoughts
  • Key physical and emotional signs of labor 
  • Timing contractions and when to go to the birthing location
  • Labor coping techniques with and without an epidural
  • Physiology of pushing and how to prevent tearing
  • Tips for birth partners

Week 2: Understanding your birth options

  • Advocacy for family-centered care 
  • Common medical interventions, including pain medication
  • Medical reasons for inducing labor
  • Cesarean birth prevention
  • Exploring your birth preferences
  • Postpartum recovery, including sexual intimacy after birth

Week 3: ABCs of feeding and caring for your baby 

  • Immediate post-birth bonding
  • Breast/chest feeding, including correct latch positioning
  • Avoiding common breast/chest feeding challenges and when to get lactation support
  • Understanding normal infant behavior, communication, appearance and sleep patterns
  • The 5 Ss of soothing a crying baby
  • Infant hygiene, including bathing, diapering and cord care
  • When to call the pediatrician

Classes are a mix of lecture, video, discussion, and practice and take place on 3 consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Fee includes the pregnant person + one support person.
